There Was A Crooked Man (Full Frame)
An offbeat 1970s black-comic Western with an all-star cast, this Joseph L. Mankiewicz film is set in 1883 in Arizona. Paris Pitman, Jr. (Kirk Douglas) is the leader of a band of outlaws that steals $500,000 from a wealthy businessman named Lomax (Arthur O'Connell). The other gang members die in a shootout, but Pitman escapes and hides the loot in women's underwear and drops it into a snake pit. After Lomax recognizes Pitman in a brothel, he is arrested by Sheriff Woodward Lopeman (Henry Fonda). At the territorial prison, Pitman bribes Warden Le Goff (Martin Gabel), offering him a share of the hidden money if he lets him escape. But before the scheme is carried through, the warden is killed by a prisoner. Lopeman becomes the new warden, and he is bent on ridding the prison of corruption. Pitman convinces Lopeman that he will cooperate with the reforms, then he uses the new freedoms given to him to plan an elaborate escape with several other men. The escape is to take place during an inspection...

The Emperor of Ocean Park by Stephen L. Carter, ISBN 055371337X
An extraordinary fiction debut: a large, stirring novel of suspense that is, at the same time, a work of brilliantly astute social observation." The Emperor of Ocean Park is set in two privileged worlds: the upper crust African American society of the eastern seaboard--old families who summer on Martha's Vineyard--and the inner circle of an Ivy League law school. It tells the story of a complex family with a single, seductive link to the shadowlands of crime.
The Emperor of the title, Judge Oliver Garland, has just died, suddenly. A brilliant legal mind, conservative and famously controversial, Judge Garland made more enemies than friends. Many years before, he'd earned a judge's highest prize: a Supreme Court nomination. But in a scene of bitter humiliation, televised across the country, his nomination collapsed in scandal. The humbling defeat became a private agony, one from which he never recovered.
But now the Judge's death raises even more questions--and it seems to be leading...

Body & Soul: Notebooks of an Apprentice Boxer by Loic J. D. Wacquant, ISBN 0195168356
When French sociologist Loic Wacquant signed up at a boxing gym in a black neighborhood of Chicago's South Side, he had never contemplated getting close to a ring. Yet for three years he immersed himself among Local fighters. He Learned the Sweet Science of bruising, participating in all phases of the pugilist's preparation. In this experimental ethnography, the scholar-turned-boxer supplies a model for a "carnal sociology" capable of capturing "the taste and ache of action." Breaking with the prefabricated images of the heroic champion stepping into the limelight, Wacquant focuses on ordinary boxers in their everyday environment of the gym. He reveals them to be devoted artisans of the virile body who hone an honorific craft, share a protective sociability, and seek recognition and redemption in the closed brotherhood of the ring. He shows how the gym functions at once as a sanctuary against the dangers of the street and a school of discipline in which occupational morality is literally...
